Music AS AN ART
The artform involved in music will always be there, I guess, but it seems to me like a collective feigning vision has taken hold on more people than ever. The old kansas city shuffle has everyone looking the wrong way while many creatively impressive bands are passing the inattentive audience by.
I just recently saw Adam Lambert (I’m so glad I NEVER watched American Idol) perform at the AMA’s, and my initial reaction, after vomiting and coming back to my senses, was to plot out how to bring art back to music. It seems like anyone who has a song that gets out into the mass media had another person write the song, a producer doctor the diddy to fuck and back, a choreographer create a distractive dance and performance (obviously for the sole purpose of the kansas city shuffle: having the audience say “ooh, what a shocking number”), and a bunch of musicians who are talented, but just need to get paid come on stage and make it a big artistic-rape-fest.
Art is more than being able to dance and shove your tongue down someones throat. It’s more than having an autotuned robot voice for a dance/trance/bullshit song. It’s more than bragging about yourself for approximately 3 minutes with a hype-man emphasizing on the last word or two of every line. All these debauch things I have just mentioned are facets of low-grade, purely ocular stimulatory entertainment. It’s the dry humping of the music world. People constantly popping fiscal boners like its a modern day orgy at the label and media conglomerate mixer. Art is about a passion that drove you to say “fuck everyone else with their visions of what MY art should be”. Art is derived solely from the creative pyre within a person. It is built up over the years or in an instant, and culminates with a fury of chaotic song and dance that ends in the birth of a painting, song, limerick, adage, joke, performance, or single act of unbridled outburst that leaves the creator and audience in awe for years to come.
Art is an expression of everything that someone can possible be within the moment of the art’s begetting. Art is the perfection that can only be truly made and witnessed once.
